Professional concrete polishing contractor in Creswick
There are lots of low cost gimmicks and DIY flooring solution products on the market to give you a "polished concrete floor look" but just like any alternative or imitation of the real thing, it typically is never as good. It might give a similar look, but it isn't the same thing and will wear out with foot traffic.
The same applies to concrete polishing because the process, chemicals and sealants used by a professional contractor in Creswick is not the same as buying a bottle of epoxy or another cheap DIY product from places like Bunnings.
So many people don't realise the difference between concrete sealing and mechanically polished concrete or why the costs as so different. Just ask yourself, "how can one contractor be so cheap compared to the others". High quality flooring solutions cost more because of the materials, labour, time and skill required - simple.
Getting your concrete polished in Creswick can also be cheaper or better value than timber flooring, carpet or tiles. Too many people don't add up the cost of materials, labour, delivery & annual maintenance.

Polished concrete floors costs in Creswick
If you want to find out the cost for polished concrete floors in Creswick it is very easy. It is more affordable than people realise compared to using other flooring materials.
There are three main choices to consider when researching the costs for polished concrete floors in Creswick because it depends on what you have already.
1. Concrete sealing costs between $50 and $75 inc gst per square metre
2. Concrete grinding and polishing will cost between $80 and $110 inc gst per square metre
3. Concrete polishing will cost up to $110 inc gst per square metre
The choice of service you select will depend if you have a brand new concrete slab that was poured in a new construction or it is an existing concrete floor that has to be worked on. The amount of work involved will then vary depending on the condition of the surface, the imperfections it has, any cracks that have to get repaired and of course the size of the area.
Either way we can provide a fixed price, written quotation, to help you work out the costs involved.
Is getting polished concrete floors in Creswick expensive?
If you are trying to decide what type of flooring to buy it is important to compare your options carefully because polished concrete floors are not actually expensive.
If you are considering laying tiles, floating timber floorboards, carpet or lino in Creswick you need to add up all the potential costs involved which include;
- How much does it cost to purchase the raw materials?
- What is the freight cost to have the materials delivered to your location?
- What is the cost to prepare the surface area to be used?
- How much does it cost to have the materials layed?
- Do you have to treat the materials once they are installed to protect them?
- How often does the surface need to be treated again to prevent further damage?
What you will very quickly discover is that getting polished concrete floors is cheaper than tiles or even floating floorboards. The costs you will find online might only be the labour cost, you have to then add the cost of materials as well. Then the cost calculation gets even more complicated when you consider that some of these materials need to be treated regularly to maintain their finish.
For example, buying tiles might cost around;
- $27-$388 per square metre to buy new tiles
- $10-$15 per square metre for tile sealant
- $30-$45 per square metre to get them laid
- $200 to $500 in local delivery fees
Assuming the floor surface is flat and doesn’t need grinding, the cost will sit between $70 and $600 per square metre to get floor tiling installed. To buy good quality timber floorboards the pricing starts at around $50 per square metre just for the materials, so as you can see all of these floor finishing choices are pretty similar in cost to have installed.
Mechanical concrete floor polishing in Creswick
Mechanically polished concrete floors are the highest quality of floor finish you can select in Creswick and better than sealing or laying tiles
- Mechanically polished concrete is better than sealed concrete
- Make your concrete floors look like a luxury hotel or museum
- High gloss, high quality flooring surface
- More durable, harder wearing compared to concrete sealing
The concept of a polished finish dates back some 20 to 30 years and was originally used to describe the process whereby a typical grey or coloured concrete floor was coated with a wax product and then highly polished.
Mechanically polished concrete finishes are created by using a polishing machine that utilise discs that contain diamonds. Much like heavy-duty sandpaper, the diamond polishing discs grind down the concrete until the desired look is achieved, exposing a small amount of aggregate (rocks in the concrete) or full exposure of the aggregate depending on your preference.
A chemical hardener is then used to penetrate the concrete, creating a reaction that dust-proofs and hardens the surface of the concrete floor. It makes it the highest quality floor finish available in Ballarat and much better than just getting a grind and seal. A commercial or residential mechanically polished floor surface looks like a museum or high end hotel to give the location a premium look and feel.
The difference between mechanical concrete polishing and concrete sealing
There is a big difference between a concrete floor that has been mechanically polished vs one that has just been sealed.
Mechanical concrete polishing is very literally a mechanical process of polishing the surface of a concrete slab using engineered floor grinders fitted with industrial diamonds. During this process, the concrete is ground, honed and polished using progressively finer grits of diamond abrasives until the floor reaches the desired level of shine (either level 1-4; matte to high gloss). In terms of durability and benefits, mechanical polished concrete has a much longer lifetime expectancy and is much more durable, especially in areas with high traffic.
However with sealed concrete, the gloss is achieved from a topical sealer. The process is simpler and involves less grinding, honing, and polishing steps. We offer our sealed concrete service as an affordable alternative to fully mechanically polished concrete.
In more simple terms the visual difference between sealed vs polished concrete is a floor that has just been sealed will still look a bit rough, like a clear coating has been poured on the floor. A fully polished floor will look a bit like a glossy marble finish, beautifully smooth like a work of art.

Concrete polishing for a new concrete slab in Creswick
We can do concrete polishing on newly poured concrete slab foundations in Creswick
If you are building a new structure on a concrete slab our company can grind and polish it once it has cured properly. You can choose a concrete floor surface that is either fully polished, honed or has a pavilion finish to suit your requirements either indoors or outdoors.
Haynes Polished Concrete is a contractor in Creswick that provides a mechanical polishing service for floor areas between 50m2 and 1000m2 in homes, retail stores, showrooms, industrial or commercial areas.
We have the necessary equipment to perform surface preparation of a new slab with a grind that will ensure it is free of any adhesives or imperfections to make sure it is beautifully smooth and flat to work on. You then have the choice to get it sealed or go the whole way and mechanically polish the surface then seal it.
The typical concrete used for most new residential slabs has a compressive strength of 20 MPa, and is designated as Normal-Class N20 concrete. However, for polished work, the use of a higher strength concrete is recommended: N32 for steel trowelled and honed finishes; N40 for burnished finishes.
The specification of the concrete is only the first step in achieving the desired polished finish and a lot will also depend on the use of good site practices if expectations are to be met. Pouring a new slab gives you more options in relation to the aggregate used, colours and textures.
A good quality surface finish is particularly important for polished concrete finishes. A generally highly polished and therefore reflective surface will highlight any trowelling marks and undulations. The main tolerance criterion that may affect polished finishes is the flatness of the surface so it’s important to make sure your concreter does a great job first time around. We can provide advice on how this needs to be done.
Concrete polishing for existing concrete floors in Creswick
We can grind an existing concrete floor so that it can then be sealed or polished
Many existing concrete floor slabs can be grinded so they are smooth enough to either seal or polish for a low-maintenance durable floor surface. Our company’s approach is to lightly grind the surface to remove stains and minor defects, any remnants of adhesive, trowelling marks and to provide a more uniform surface to work with. This generally improves the appearance of the floor to deliver satisfactory results.
Since most concrete slabs have not been designed to receive a polished finish and the surface may have been repaired or had sections replaced to run new electrical or plumbing services, a variable finish can be expected and in some cases (especially for industrial interior designs) even preferred.
Cracks and poor joint details may also need attention. If cracks are exposed, these can either be filled or repaired to reduce their impact, or left as features in the floor. Depending on the application, they can often add character to the finish.
It is such a hard wearing surface because there is no topical coating. What will happen is the substrate is honed to your preference to achieve a matt, satin or full gloss look to the stone exposure you prefer. Even for an existing concrete floor it is extremely scratch-resistant because of the polishing process we go through that hardens the surface. The common terms used are;
Surface polished – we will focus on accentuating the effects from the troweling/burnishing process when the slab was poured and cured. This can sometimes look a bit smokey or charcoal like in texture.
Minimal Exposure polish – this is where a small amount of stone is shown so that the floor has some texture to it and isn’t plain. How closely the stones are really depends on how the mixture was originally poured.
Full Exposure polish – this is when you want to show off all the aggregate stones in the concrete mix. It is the most ‘natural’ look because you see so much of the stone that is in the concrete. If coloured stones or other types of aggregate was also added during pouring these will come through as well.

concrete flooring in Creswick
- Retail clothing shops
- Cafe or restaurants
- Furniture showrooms
- Kids play centres
The most visited locations in Creswick and regional Victorian areas are shopping centres and retail stores that receive the highest volumes of foot traffic of any property type.
When there are that many people walking in and out of a property as well as things like trolleys, temporary point of sale displays, kids rides or even seasonal displays the flooring gets a constant barrage. That is why it makes so much sense to get polished concrete floors in a retail site.
Great for high foot traffic
When it comes to selecting a suitable flooring material for a retail space, you’ll find countless options to choose from in Gisborne. Keep in mind that these areas receive higher than normal foot traffic so the choices reduce quickly to those that are durable and can withstand continuous use.
Looks amazing
Let’s also not forget that these spaces need to help build your brand’s reputation so it has to look great and represent the business in the best light possible. As a retail business owner, think about every location you have visited, there are very few that use timber floor boards, carpet or even lino and for good reason.

Health and safety
The biggest consideration for retail property owners in recent years has been how can they improve the health safety of a space. Using carpets for instance are not a good option for people with allergies like asthma.
Or imagine the costs of dealing with food or liquid spills on floor boards or a carpeted area when it gets trapped in the fibres – this is why so many cafes have concrete floors. Even floor tiling can catch debris in the grout lines or broken tiles can lift to present a trip hazard. Concrete flooring does not hold dust, dirt, and other allergens while also being very easy to clean or maintain.
Finishes and colours
The finishes available to be used in retail environments include a mixture of textures and sealants to ensure it is safe for customers avoid slipping and can be applied to existing or new slab to compliment your interior design styling.
The difference is that concrete will require fairly minimal maintenance over the long term vs other options and most likely won’t need to be replaced.
Lighting
Another aesthetic aspect to consider is lighting. Retail stores are usually illuminated to increase the appeal of the items being sold as shoppers browse the store. You can amplify this effect with polished concrete flooring because it can be installed with a highly reflective surface.
If there are areas with low or natural lighting concrete flooring that is polished can help reduce your store’s reliance on lights or let you use them in creative ways.

Polished concrete floors pros and cons
There are more polished concrete floor pros than cons. Getting your concrete floors polished is one of the smartest decisions you can make if you are building or renovating. Concrete is a material that is sustainable, eco-friendly, durable, tough and means you don’t have to use other materials on top of your existing floor surface.
That means there are less chemicals, less layers and other complications to deal with compared to using carpet, tiles, timber etc. This type of flooring doesn’t collect dust, doesn’t have any grout or join lines to worry about.
Concrete polishing is a fast and inexpensive method of grinding and polishing pre-existing concrete floor surfaces using our diamond sharp disks in order to create a super smooth beautiful floor. They create a very contemporary look, while being exceptionally hardwearing with very low maintenance requirements.
How many different polished concrete floor textures are possible?
Polished concrete floor textures will vary greatly because it depends what you ask a concrete polishing company to do. If you simply seal your concrete then the texture will literally be whatever you see on the floor. Sealing just puts a top coat over it to protect the surface.
If you get mechanically polished concrete then the textures can vary greatly depending on how heavy the grind is. The heavier the floor is polished the more aggregate is exposed and therefore more texture.
The other variable that has to be considered is the type of concrete that was poured when the slab was formed. The amount and type of aggregate can vary so to the colour of the concrete. So together with the depth of the grind, the texture can vary between properties. While most homes or businesses will have a standard ‘grey’ concrete, some may have slight colour variations.

What polished concrete floor colours are available in Creswick?
Many people we speak to think the only choice of surface finish colour light grey, have a look at our gallery to see different types.
Our company offers a choice of finishes for a concrete floor that is polished in Gisborne. You can create a modern interior design style with a very smooth surface or you can choose to have a more organic, rough, look which exposes more of the aggregate.
Your choices will also depend on what mix was used to pour the original slab, so existing locations may be a little more limited compared to a brand new build where colours or even underfloor heating can be considered.
We can also make sure you get the right finish for the right location, we consider whether the surface will be indoors or outdoors to make sure you have the right texture to suit a wet area around a pool or outdoor living area.
How can concrete get shiny?
Concrete polishing is a fast and inexpensive method of grinding and polishing pre-existing concrete surfaces with equipment that has diamond sharp disks that cut into the cement to create a smooth, attractive and a choice of shine levels. Believe it or not, even old, existing slabs, can be ground and polished to create very hard wearing, scratch and stain resistant floors that are easy to maintain or won’t be scratched by high heels or furniture.
To achieve a smooth, glossy surface, Mark is a concrete polisher that will start by using a floor grinding machine with rotating diamond-abrasive heads to remove the surface layer of the concrete to make it perfectly level. This can also remove any deep scratches or even cracks in some cases.
Following the initial stage, finer diamond-abrasives are progressively used (usually starting at 40 grit going up to 3,000 grit) to reveal or expose the aggregate in the slab – either new or existing – and this is done to the level that you want depending how much aggregate you want to see.
Typically, concrete is not considered polished before 400 grit which is known as honed concrete. Polished concrete is normally finished to either the 800, 1500, or 3000 grit level depending on the shine and reflection you desire. Polished concrete is measured in grades and finishes: the higher the grade, the larger the exposed aggregates; similarly, the higher the finish, the shinier the polish.
During the process we do add treatment chemicals that can increase the density of the surface to help harden the concrete even more than its original state. Further grinding with progressively finer diamond polishing pads then creates a very smooth surface and depending how much is done you will get a sheen on it because it is so smooth. You have the choice of sheen that can match your interior design requirements from a satin to a high-gloss, very reflective finish that reflects lots of light & looks amazing.
What locations or types of building structures can polished concrete floors be used in?
Concrete floor polishing is very versatile and is suitable for lots of different building types whether they are single storey homes, a retail store, a shopping centre or even a warehouse. Some of the most common places you will see polished concrete floors include;
- Restaurants
- Hotel foyers
- Garage floors
- Living Room areas
- Warehouses
- Retail stores
- Office buildings
- Car dealership showrooms
For any of these locations it doesn’t matter it it is an old concrete floor or if you are installing a new one, the choices of textures, colours, and finishes are nearly limitless. Texture and finish are determined by the grade of concrete that was used in the slab, how it’s poured, and the polishing process you choose.
You can achieve different colours if pigment is added into the wet concrete when it is being poured to get a specific colour tone or you could add coloured aggregates like stones, marbles or even pieces of glass. When the concrete is polished these will show through the surface.
It means you can have a surface that looks smooth but dull with not much aggregate visible through to a deep polish that cuts down to expose more aggregate which looks a bit like Terrazzo depending how large your aggregate pieces are.
Can polished concrete really look good in a home or office?
A lot of people think of concrete as really boring, grey and just used for footpaths on the street. It is the most common building material used around the world and if it is polished or sealed it can look stunning. Believe it or not concrete has been used to construct buildings since the early Roman times making domes, aqueducts, drainage systems and even amphitheatres.
It is simply the most durable material that you can use and it is why so many historic buildings are still standing today.
For most homes or businesses you won’t even realise that you have a concrete slab as your sub floor. If you remove the tiling, carpet or floor boards you can actually use your existing slab, get it polished and make your floors look amazing. There is no need to add another layer of flooring at all.
So polished concrete can look incredible but also be very economical over its lifetime because it needs little maintenance, doesn’t have to be replaced and is so hard that it will probably outlast you.
What are the types of concrete polish finishes called?
There are certain industry terms that apply to the types of concrete polished floor finishes you can get. It starts with a hazy, paste like finish which is normally a sealer through to a very deep polish where large aggregate is exposed and can be made to shine in different levels.
Salt and pepper polished concrete floor
This is when a fine aggregate exposure is produced by removing a very thin top layer of the concrete during the initial grinding process to expose some of the sand aggregate. The exposed sand resembles salt and pepper and provides a nice colour accent to the concrete so that the floor has a bit of texture to it.
Light aggregate exposure polished concrete floor
A medium exposure grind will reveal the top side of the aggregates. This concrete floor style will show a bit more of the aggregate in the cement mix for larger texture shapes on the floor surface. The spacing and sizes will be a bit more random compared to the salt and pepper finish because it is cut deeper into the mix.
Heavy or full aggregate exposure polished concrete floor
Heavy exposure or a full grind will reveal the maximum amount of aggregate in your slab. This finish cuts very deeply to really show off the elements mixed into your concrete slab for the most amount of texture in the surface being shown.
Is polished concrete slippery?
A lot of people ask us if polished concrete is slippery, but it is just like walking on floor tiles in your bathroom really. Polished concrete floors may have a shine or gloss to them but you can still comfortably walk on them without slipping, just like you would in a bathroom, laundry or a kitchen. If the right processes are applied when the floors are getting polished then a newly polished concrete floor can meet or exceed Australia standards for slip resistance.
Just like tiles, timber or even lino if the concrete floor gets wet then it will be slippery just as any other hard surface would be.
If the polished concrete is outside for a pool surround or patio then a pavilion finish can be applied so there is more texture to the surface to help reduce the chances of slipping.
What is the difference between a grind and seal vs a grind and polish?
We often get asked what is the difference between a grind and seal vs a grind and polish?
Grind
The grinding stage is the same in both instances because the concrete is worked on to make sure it is smooth. What will differ is how much grinding is needed to get the floor to be level and smooth enough to work on. Some floors might have glue, adhesive or small cracks that have to be repaired, so more grinding might be needed in those situations.
Seal
This is where a chemical sealant is poured over the concrete but no other work is done to the surface. It is simply covering the floor area with a protective coating. This is the simplest form of protecting your concrete floor.
Polish
Just like polishing shoes or a car, when you polish a concrete floor there is work involved in grinding, then polishing the service to achieve the desired texture and level of sheen you want. This is a more intensive amount of work to make the floor totally smooth & very shiny like in a museum for example.
This is normally called a mechanical polished concrete floor service where heavy machinery is used to polish the floor area.
Can you pull up your carpet then polish the concrete floor under it?
If you grab a corner of your carpet in one of your rooms and lift it up, most likely you will see concrete underneath (unless the building was built on piers and timber floor boards)
This cement foundation is a big slab that the structure has been built on. If you pull all the carpet up you can replace it with either;
- Floor tiles
- Vinyl
- Floating timber floor boards
- Polished concrete
The existing concrete slab underneath any floor material can get a grind done to it so it is flat and smooth, then can either be sealed or get a mechanical concrete polish to be made shiny.
